Status MigraineStatus Migraine is a painful neurological condition, of which the most common is an intense and disabling episodic headache . There may be photophobia and vomiting with marked headache but the course is highly variable. The resolution phase occurs as the headache gradually fades. It develops around the walls of the affected blood vessels. The classic migraine develops in four stages - prodrome, aura, headache and postheadache . This stage will develop about 24 hours prior to the aura stage. The aura stage is a slowly expanding area of blindness surrounded by a sparkling edge that increases to involve up to one half of the field of vision of each eye. Migraine's secondary characteristics are inconsistent. Triggers precipitating a particular episode of migraine vary widely. In addition to the aura, the migraine sufferer may see flashing lights, colors or zig-zags of light, experience a prickly or burning sensation and/or muscle weakness on one side of the body. People with classic migraines experience an aura before their headaches. Most often, an aura is a visual disturbance (outlines of lights or jagged light images). Classic migraines are usually much more severe than common migraines. All migraine knowledge reduces to the experiences of the individual migraine. Every migraineur has a formula: when to sleep, what to eat, what herbs and supplements to use, what drugs to take, what triggers to avoid, and where to get advice. Because a migraineur's daily actions usually have so much effect on the frequency and intensity of illness, there is significant advantage to learning both the scientific medicine and folklore of migraine. Status Migraine affect over 23 million people, with roughly 75 percent of them being women. Migraines begin with the release of serotonin; a biochemical substance stored in the blood platelets produced naturally in the body.Common migraine accounts for 80% of migraines. There is no "aura" before a common migraine. Migraine headaches typically last from 4-72 hours and vary in frequency from daily to fewer than 1 per year. Migraine affects about 15% of the population. Migraines are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea . Migraine is a frustrating chronic illness that is widespread in the population (10% diagnosed, 5% undiagnosed), with seriousness varying from a rare annoyance to a life-threatening daily experience. Migraine headaches affect more women than men, and this may be due to the fluctuations in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These types of migraines can affect both children and adults, although it is more adults that suffer from status migraines. The other types of migraines are: hemiplegic migraine, which involves muscle weakness or partial paralysis lasting less than an hour; ophthalmoplegic migraine, which involves temporary eye inconveniences, such as droopy eyelid and pupillary changes, lasting from several days to weeks; basilar artery migraine, which involves neurological spasm lasting for about six to eight hours; and status migraine; which involves a severe migraine attack, lasting longer than 24 hours.
