Sleep Terror Disorder - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment


Sleep terror disorder is defined as repeated temporary arousal from sleep, during which the affected person appears and acts extremely frightened. Sleep terror disorder is also known as "night errors." Children from age two to six are most prone to night terrors, and they affect about fifteen percent of all children. In addition to night terrors, adult night terror sufferers have many of the characteristics of abused and depressed individuals including inhibition of aggression. It can occur with sleep disorders include depression , decreased concentration, fatigue, anxiety , and irritability. People with chronic sleep problems tend to have other illnesses such as stomach problems, muscle aches, and headaches. Patients with sleepwalking disorder show complex automatic behaviors, such as wandering aimlessly, and performing other activities of varying complexity and duration. Persons affected with the disorder usually have their eyes wide open in a stare. In adults, stress and lack of sleep seem to be triggers, as well as emotional tension and the use of alcohol. Psychosocial stress may threaten sleep more than hormonal changes. Many young women reduce sleep to cope with work and their roles as mothers and wives
