The tics often resemble nervous behavior. Tics can occur in any body part, such as the face, shoulders, hands or legs. Transient tic disorder is a temporary condition that causes single or multiple motor tics, which are brief, repetitive, difficult-to-control movements or noises (vocalizations). Tics are caused by neurological disorders that could have resulted from brain damage at birth and head trauma. Tic disorders are classified is Transient tic disorder consists of multiple motor and/or phonic tics with duration of at least 4 weeks, but less than 12 months. Chronic tic disorder is either single or multiple motor or phonic tics, but not both, which are present for more than a year. Tourette's disorder is diagnosed when both motor and phonic tics are present for more than a year. Transient (short-lived, temporary) tic disorder is common in children: Up to 24% of all school-age children have had tics. As many as 1 in 100 people may experience some form of tic disorder, usually before the onset of puberty. Transient tics last for a short while, only several weeks or months, and are usually not associated with specific behavioral problems.
